Welcome to Aquaharp!

Please enjoy browsing through my website.
I am a professional harpist, performing in and around Charleston, SC.

Aquaharp (aqua+harp), suggested to me by a long time friend, encompasses two aspects of my life that have been with me since childhood.  I am closely associated with both the aquatic world of open water swimming and the world of a symphony orchestra as a professional harpist in the Charleston, SC area.

Harpist for Charleston WeddingsPrimarily, I am a classically trained musician having studied with one of the finest orchestral harpists of the 20th century, Alice Chalifoux, principal harpist of the Cleveland Orchestra for 43 years.  After studying full time with Miss Chalifoux for six years, (BM, MM harp performance) I became the principal harpist of the Charleston (SC) Symphony in 1987.  I continue to hold that position currently as the orchestra’s only harpist.  The Charleston Symphony Orchestra is the largest arts organization in South Carolina and the level of performance is quite high.

I have been swimming competitively for most of my life.  I began long distance swimming in 1997 upon realizing that my strengths and mindset were better suited to the open ocean rather than a pool. I have always been a big believer in having multiple interests and strengths and I know that it is fully possible to excel in several unrelated areas of life.

I treasure them all and have chosen to stretch once again beyond family, music and sport in running for and being elected to Charleston city council.  It has provided experiences and learning opportunities well beyond those of playing in an orchestra or engaging in elite athletics.
